Degeneracy-Based Real-Time Sub-Event Detection in Twitter Stream
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we deal with the task of sub-event detection in evolving events using posts collected from the Twitter stream. By representing a sequence of successive tweets in a short time interval as a weighted graph-of-words, we are able to identify the key moments (sub-events) that compose an event using the concept of graph degeneracy. We then select a tweet to best describe each sub-event using a simple yet effective heuristic. We evaluated our approach using humangenerated summaries containing the actual important sub-events within each event and compare it to two baseline approaches using several performance metrics such as DET curves and precision/recall performance. Extensive experiments on recent sporting event streams indicate that our approach outperforms the dominant sub-event detection methods and constructs a humanreadable event summary by aggregating the most representative tweets of each sub-event.

Piecing together the puzzle: Improving event content coverage for real-time sub-event detection using adaptive microblog crawling
In an age when people are predisposed to report real-world events through their social media accounts, many researchers value the benefits of mining user generated content from social media. Compared with the traditional news media, social media services, such as Twitter, can provide more complete and timely information about the real-world events. However events are often like a puzzle and in ...
متن کاملSub-story detection in Twitter with hierarchical Dirichlet processes
Social media has now become the de facto information source on real world events. The challenge, however, due to the high volume and velocity nature of social media streams, is in how to follow all posts pertaining to a given event over time – a task referred to as story detection. Moreover, there are often several different stories pertaining to a given event, which we refer to as sub-stories ...
متن کاملTwitterNews: Real time event detection from the Twitter data stream
Research in event detection from the Twitter streaming data has been gaining momentum in the last couple of years. Although such data is noisy and often contains misleading information, Twitter can be a rich source of information if harnessed properly. In this paper, we propose a scalable event detection system, TwitterNews, to detect and track newsworthy events in real time from Twitter. Twitt...
متن کاملRecency is good: expanding with fresh news improves event detection in Twitter
Twitter is a popular microblogging site that is a good source of real-time information. Detecting events in Twitter is an ongoing research effort and a fundamental task is clustering tweets according to which (news) event they describe. Document expansion can improve this clustering, especially for Twitter, given that tweets are short. While document expansion using external corpora has been ar...
متن کاملEvenTweet: Online Localized Event Detection from Twitter
Microblogging services such as Twitter, Facebook, and Foursquare have become major sources for information about real-world events. Most approaches that aim at extracting event information from such sources typically use the temporal context of messages. However, exploiting the location information of georeferenced messages, too, is important to detect localized events, such as public events or...
